When Snowflakes Attack

Snow can be beautiful, white peaked mountains, a delicate frost on the trees, snow covered fields that go on forever. But snow can be destructive, overwhelming, all encompassing, even deadly.

At DWHQ, this became apparent for snowflakes of the digital variety, as designer Sinead and developer Tiago were found out.

One of the great things about Design Wizard, is that our library is overflowing with components, designs and images. Being a big fan of art nouveau and detailed patterns, Sinead was inspired to create a Christmas greeting using a delicate pattern of snow. So when she went to search for blue snowflakes, there were a lot. A LOT. Blue snowflakes, white snowflakes, cut out snowflakes to drop over a design, backgrounds made of snowflakes, snowflakes on wooden backgrounds, single snowflakes, flurries of snowflakes. A plethora of snowflakes to choose from.

Sinead set about painstakingly layering one delicate snowflake over another, creating a beautifully intricate pattern on an icy blue background. But this was early days for Design Wizard, and while Sinead’s image was beautiful, it was layer heavy. Let layer upon layer of snow fall on a building and it will start to strain. Do the same to the Wizard and he’s sure to complain - the Wizard was not pleased.

So Design Wizard crashed, and then it crashed again. In fact it crashed so many times, I’m still not able to mention snowflakes to our developer team without hearing the odd exclamation of disgust. Processing all those layers into one final image overwhelmed the service.

In terms of design, Sinead tells me she’s learned a lesson in simplicity. That the age old adage of less is more is true. Tiago reduced the limit of layers that can be used while keeping the integrity of the creative process for the user.

But this is all part of the process of creating a robust online graphic design software tool. We put Design Wizard to the test so when you’re enjoying the final product, you can be assured Design Wizard is sturdy enough to handle whatever you may want to create.

Happy Designing!
